Meet Director:  Gord Hunter;  Controller: Bert Waslander

SOAR series getting a quick overhaul

The new SOAR (Summer Orienteering/ Adventure Race) series got off to a fine start last week. Event #2 at the Wellington St Royal Oak pub will be next Tuesday, July 28th. The pub is on Wellington at Hinton, one block east of Holland.

First a traffic note: Queensway (Hwy 417) westbound off ramp at Parkdale is closed. Choose another route. Orienteers like to do that.

Second: Congratulations to the winners of the Royal Oak $25 draw prize certificates at SOAR #1. Knowing of the problems that sometimes befall lottery winners their names are not being revealed at this time.

Third: Thanks to consultation with course controller, Bert Waslander, we have some innovations for SOAR #2. Bert has also been very helpful in improving the original course design.

Fourth: A note to volunteers from meet director Gord Hunter: I am out of town, my volunteer list is not. Could you please confirm your availability to help at SOAR #2: gordhun (at) rogers dot com?

Will you be participating in Royal Oak #2? Please take a moment to fill out the survey below so we can reserve a map for you. Non-respondents are still welcome but may find the map of their choice is not available. Family and group entries may reply to this e-mail to confirm their participation. Those who have signed up and paid for the whole series map skip this stage. Their map is already reserved for them.

Yes I wish to participate in the Royal Oak SOAR #2. Please reserve a map for me on course.

Course Notes

Daylight-O Registration opens at 5:30
  • Starts 6 pm to 7 pm
  • Novice and Intermediate courses. Start and finish at the Royal Oak Pub
  • New: We are adding daylight Short Advanced and Long Advanced courses. This is for people who find the night-O just too late with work the next day or just prefer the daylight orienteering.
  • We have to add two interesting features, however. Daylight Advanced course participants will have to find their way to a ‘remote’ start location marked on their map.
  • Daylight advanced participants will probably have to time their own start and finish. We will not likely have a timer at the start location.

Night-O Registration opens at 8 pm.

  • Mass Start at remote location about 9 pm Finish at Royal Oak pub.
  • New this week: Two choices for Night-O: Short Advanced +/- 5 km and Long Advanced (+/- 7 km).
  • Same Mass Start; Same SOHO (Strategic Orienteering Handicap for Ottawa) box of controls.
  • Participants must have a flashlight or headlamp.
  • Due to high amount of orienteering in low-traffic and no-traffic areas participants may choose to wear a reflective safety vest or two reflective arm bands. The idea is to have you visible to the traffic around you, not necessarily visible in the headlamp of the orienteers behind you.
