Aug. 31st Course Setter's notes:

Hi Folks,

Here are some important – very important – last minute updates for the final Royal Oak Summer Orienteering event, this one at the popular Royal Oak Kanata.

First: thank you to all who have written to reserve maps. The maps are printed and we have printed a few extra, just in case. We can print more if needed if we hear from you.

But we can only guarantee you the map of your choice if we hear from you tonight!

gordhunter@hotmail.com

As of now we have these extra maps Novice 2; Intermediate 18 (this one usually has the most walk-ins); Night Short Advanced 13; Night Long Advanced 9. If you want a map reserved write back toute de suite.

Handicap Notes:

  • Both Night O courses will have a handicap box to start. You will have to update your handicap at registration. Allow time.

Course notes:

Intermediate and Novice course starts may be from 6 PM to 7 PM

Night Start will be about 8:45 after a 10 minute group walk to the start. Be ready for instructions at 8:30 PM

Both Night-O courses will have two maps given in one map case at the Start. There will be one control card covering both maps per participant, given at Registration.

The road run section has been avoided. The long O course will cross Goulbourn Forced Road twice. Be careful there. The transition between the two maps will be a safe distance from any road.

Control Lights. After testing the woods I’ve decided to do away with the idea of night control lights. The woods are too open and the lights I have are just too bright.

Mandatory headlamp or flashlight and safety reflective material for participants rules will apply.

Prizes:

I have Royal Oak gift certificates to be given as draw prizes. I will award one for every ten participants.

Also there will be a draw for one certificate for those who have volunteered to help in this series.

There will also be a special draw for one certificate for those who have participated in all four Royal Oak SOAR events.

Thank you to the Royal Oak pubs for their generosity.

Looking forward to 'meeting you at the OAK'.

The Final SOAR Event is Tuesday, Sept 1!

The final event of the first Royal Oak SOAR (Summer Orienteering/ Adventure Racing) is coming up at the Royal Oak Kanata on Tuesday September 1st.

All are welcome. One does not have to be a regular ‘SOARer’ to participate. Here are some things to keep in mind.

There are two different registration and start periods.
6PM to 7PM Registration and starts for the daylight Novice (2.5 km) and Intermediate (3.5km) courses.
8 PM to Dark Registration for the Long and Shorter Night Orienteering courses

Start and finish points for the evening/ daylight orienteering will be random start times at the Royal Oak.

Start for the Night-O (a bit before 9 PM) will be at a ‘walk-to distant point’ and a group start. Finish for the Night-O will be at the Royal Oak.

Special Notes for the Night-O
These will be special courses with much more woods running than previous events.
Participants will use two different maps. Both will be given to them back to back in one map case at the start.
Both courses will start with the special SOHO handicap box. This section will be in a newly mapped area.
From the SOHO box both courses will take you in to an extensive bit of forest.
Both courses will end with a nice run through somewhat familiar Kanata Lakes/ Beaverbrook terrain to the Royal Oak where a nice cold one will be waiting on tap.

To help with the map printing please let us know whether to expect you or not and which course you would be entering.

Please write to me at gordhunter@hotmail.com to tell me your intention and for groups the number of maps you will need. Evening Novice, Evening Intermediate, Night-O Long and Night-O Short are the four choices.

With thanks,
Gord Hunter
