Bate Island Training - Map Orientation and Reading Skills Get Off the Trail!: Intermediate Orienteering Technique
May 1st 2014 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Map: Bate Island
Our first Get Off the Trail training session will focus on orienting the map properly by using our surroundings and our compass and on improving our reading skills. Bates Island is mapped at 1:2,000 which makes for great ‘micro-orienteering’. Is your brain as fast as your feet? Reading ahead and staying in contact with your map are vital skills for orienteering at any map scale.
We will start and end with a group discussion where we can share goals and ideas. I can give you some tips and feedback about what you are doing well and what you can improve on. Please complete this evaluation worksheet form and hand it in at our first session.
Meet at the parking lot at the East end of Bates Island at 6:30 for discussion. We will be heading out on course around 7:00.
