Summer Solstice Event # 4 – The Exciting Conclusion

Plan to be at the Royal Oak Pub in Kanata for the conclusion of Orienteering Ottawa’s series of spring Tuesday evening events, The Summer Solstice Series.

This year we are pleased to have the Royal Oak pub as our hosting sponsor.

There are some special notes for SS #4 that I would like to bring to your attention.

Before the Start:
Registration will be started by 6 PM. To speed up the process if you would like to send me an e-mail by Monday evening to let me know you are coming on Tuesday we will have your control card ready for you on arrival. Just sign the registration and waiver and hand over the fee and the card is there waiting for you. But send me the note by Monday evening as on Tuesday I’ll be busy putting out controls. gordhun@rogers.com
Plan to arrive early to register. Late registrations should not expect extra time to finish. Count on the fact that evening traffic to Kanata can be slow.

The Start:
The start area is actually behind the Royal Oak pub and straddles a street. You will be given 60 seconds to study your map and move to the side of the street you wish to travel on as you start. We do not want to have anyone crossing the street or travelling along the street in a group right after the start.

The course:
The competition area is a mixture of urban streets, urban parks and natural area.
You may not go on areas marked olive green – residential out of bounds
You may not go on areas marked with purple hatching - mostly golf course fairways, greens, etc - but also at least one residential area where even the streets are OOB!
There is an area marked in the terrain with out of bounds, construction and no trespassing signs. WE DO HAVE PERMISSION FOR YOU TO GO THERE. There are controls points in this area and that is okay. However be wary of new underbrush and some poison ivy in this area.
Be careful on and crossing the streets and give way to other people. As you participate you are an ambassador for orienteering.
You have exactly one hour to find as many of the 28 controls as your handicap requires.
Usual rules – find your number of controls and get back within an hour, 5 points per correct control punch, get back early with your number and get a bonus, get back late and get a 2 point per minute penalty.
The Finish:
HERE IS A NEW FEATURE – RECIPROCAL SCORING. We will mark your time on the card and then you find someone to check your card and calculate your points. You offer to mark someone else’s card. There will be master punch and scoring instructions posted on a table.
When your card is scored and signed by your scorer you hand it in to the Timing Table and then you can enjoy some refreshments.
Allow some time for the timing team incorporate your result in to the master sheet and for the wonderful Carolyn Duke to finalize the series standings and we will be on to the prize giving.
During that time feel free to enjoy the snacks, meals and beverages available at the Royal Oak.

Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday Evening,
Gord Hunter

PS On Tuesday we will be making an announcement about the new evening/ night SOAR Series. ( SOAR- Summer Orienteering / Adventure Racing) You won't want to miss it.
