The Barrens Thursday Orienteering Practice
May 31st 2018 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Map: The Barrens
Parking and meeting point: Park along the side of Thomas Dolan Pkwy between Stonecrest Rd and Carp Rd. Look for the bunch of cars and/or my red Honda Fit with a roofrack (unfortunately the club banner is needed for another event). The pin in the map below is in the exact location.
Training: This week will be a challenge to cap off the spring season.
For the advanced and HPP groups there is a 'multi-technique' course designed to gradually get you into the map and the map reading and ending with a difficult set of controls through the barrens terrain. It starts with a line-o, then has some control picking, all designed to get you into careful map reading. Then there is a section of contours and cliffs only before some regular orienteering at the end including one really challenging long route choice leg. There are 5.4 and 6.8 km options.
For the intermediate group there is a 3.4 km line-o (how closely can you follow the line through the terrain) designed to force you to carefully read the details in the terrain. There are a few controls along the line that you need to find and pin-point on the map at the end.
There will be small flags in woods with no SI (there will be control codes).
A reminder to please e-mail Jeff Teutsch at programs@ottawaoc.ca by noon on Thursday to reserve a map. We do not guarantee maps for those that don't send an e-mail.
