Map: Beaverbrook

Meet Director: Ken Moore; Controller: Bruce Brenot

Note: Sunday June 24 Due to some inconsistencies in names, the overall results have been updated. If you have calculated how fast you have to run to be in the top 10 after Tuesday, you may have to calculated again. Good Luck.

The final Summer Solstice event will take place on a new map in the Kanata/Beaverbrook area on June 26th 2018. The start and finish areas are to the north-west of the parking lot of the Ottawa Public Library – Beaverbrook (2500 Campeau Drive, Kanata), just to the west of Earl of March Secondary School. Please note that there is limited parking in the library parking lot; however, there is additional parking further to the west at the John G. Mlacak Centre, also 2500 Campeau Drive. Following the meet join us for pizza while the final series score is tabulated. (See below)

This is a score-O event where participants mass start and have a 1-hour time limit to collect as many controls as they can before returning to the finish. New this year are controls suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced orienteers. These are labelled A, B, and C, respectively, on the control description. (For instance, control 31A is suitable for beginners.) Each control adds points to your score but if you arrive after the 1-hour time limit, points are deducted from your score accordingly. There is a handicap system in place that you can use on the Summer Solstice web page. If you have not yet worked out what your handicap will be you can do so at https://www.ottawaoc.ca/index.php/handicap.

Please don’t be late returning to the finish as we must check everyone back in before any controls can be removed from the course.

If you are new (1st or 2nd year) to orienteering or if you will be running with children, please plan to arrive early enough to register and then participate in a special mini-clinic where you will get some inside information about the evening's event. We expect 70+ participants so registration can get crowded.

Notes to keep in mind:

  • Be careful crossing the streets, this is an urban area!
  • There may be soccer and baseball games going on not far from the start, please don’t interfere with these events
  • Remember to bring a watch
  • Use lots of insect repellent

Timings:

  • 6:00pm Registration.
  • 6:20pm - 6:35pm The mini-clinic.
  • 6:40pm The group will be gathered together for instructions.
  • 6:45pm Mass start.
  • 7:45pm Everyone should be back at the finish and pizza will be available.

Pizza : Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy a pizza while we wait to see who are top ten. A variety of pizzas will be sold at $3 a slice and canned drinks available for $0.50. If you will be joining us, please complete this form so we can order enough for all and you can likely get your preferences. If you want gluten free pizza, please see the note on the form.

Put in your Pizza request by midnight Monday.

Have fun!
