Map: Foley Mountain Conservation Area

Meet Director/Controller Mark Gibbard/Anita Brattland

This week's event will be at the Foley Mountain Conservation Area, a wonderful area of detailed hills and open maple forests that was last used for the 2017 Canadian Orienteering Championships.

The start, finish and parking location will be at the Foley Mountain Interpretive Center. Drive to Perth and then follow Highway 10 towards Westport. Just before you start the long descent down the hill into Westport, take a left turn (at the orienteering sign) through a gate and follow the road for 2 km to the Foley Mountain Interpretive Center and parking. On this road you may encounter runners, please drive with great care. Along this road you will also encounter a park-permit pay station; here you do not need to purchase a day pass as this is already covered by our group use permit with the park and included in your course registration fee.

Driving time is around 85 minutes to reach Foley Mountain from Ottawa and parking at the Interpretive Center is limited; we highly encourage orienteers to reach out to one another and car pool for this event !

Four courses will be on offer:

• Novice - 2.1 km, 10 controls, map scale 1:7500

• Intermediate - 3.4 km, 14 controls, map scale 1:7500

• Short Advanced – 4.3 km, 16 controls, map scale 1:7500

• Long Advanced – 6.6 km, 20 controls, map scale 1:10 000

The map was completely updated and expanded in 2017 (5m contours).

Registration is from 10:00 - 11:00 with starts from 10:15 - 11:30. All participants MUST report to the finish by 2:00 pm to allow time for control pick-up.

There will be a cash BBQ (hamburgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs) beginning around 11:30 am for those who want to grab a bite to eat and socialize after their run. The beach is nearby, too, so you can take a swim in the lake afterwards!
