Map: Lac Beauchamp

This week's meet will be held at beautiful Lac Beauchamp. If you have not yet been to this area, you can look forward to open, runnable forest throughout much of the map, while the south part offers intriguing terrain consisting of large open slabs of rock (represented on the map as open land). These open areas are trickier than might be expected and will be sure to keep you on your navigational toes! The Novice course will guide you along distinct, easy-to-follow trails within the forested area. The Intermediate and Advanced courses will take you into the open rock areas where you will definitely want to have a compass on board!

There are four courses to choose from:

  • Novice: 2.2 km, on trails, scale 1:5,000.
Never orienteered before? Join our free mini-clinic at 10:30.
  • Intermediate: 3.7 km, controls are near trails, scale 1:10,000.
Need a refresher on how to use a compass? Join our free mini-clinic at 10:30.
  • Short Advanced: 5.5 km, scale 1:10,000
  • Long Advanced: 8.1 km, scale 1:10,000,
printed on two maps which will both be in your map bag at the start.

Contours: 5m

A few notes to keep in mind:

  • All courses involve crossing the park's internal roadway and traveling along it to some extent. Please use caution while on course near the roadway and while driving to/from the event.
  • The wet spring means water features that are on the map may appear larger, and you may see some flat, temporarily wet areas not marked as wet. A change of shoes for the drive home isn’t a bad idea, as wet feet are a definite possibility!
  • A few brand new mountain bike trails are not marked on the map, and due to the amount of deer in the park there are some animal “trails” that are not mapped.

Water: Please bring your own water bottle, which you can leave at the finish area. We will provide water but would like to limit the use of disposable cups at the finish. Water and cups will be provided midway through the Intermediate and both Advanced courses.

Location: The park is at 745 Boulevard Maloney (https://goo.gl/maps/x6spEdUFXgqmeC5v6) east of downtown Gatineau. Some roads in Gatineau are currently closed due to flooding, including the Chaudière Bridge, so please plan your route accordingly.

Washrooms: Washrooms are open to the public inside the pavilion (near the registration and finish area).

Registration: 10:00 to 11:00 am. Registration is on site the day of the event. If you are bringing a large group (over 10) please contact Linda Connell and we will put aside maps for you.

Starts: 10:30 to 11:30

Finish: Courses close and controls are collected at 2 pm. All participants must report to the SI download by 2pm.

Maps: Novice and Intermediate maps will be available at the registration table. Short and Long Advanced maps will be provided at the start.

We have had some people concerned about the flooding in the Lac Beauchamp area. The park that we are using is north of Hwy 148 and away from any flooding. There is certainly huge damage and concern along the Ottawa River and we recognize and empathize with that, but it will not affect our meet.

We hope to see you at Lac Beauchamp!
