University of Ottawa Summer Orienteering
August 24th 2021 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Map: Ottawa U
Meet Director: Phil Turcanu | Controller: Adrian Turcanu
We have been looking forward to this one for a while! This is a brand new map of the uOttawa campus following countless landscaping changes and new buildings added to the campus making this a very technical urban sprint location!
It has been 2 years since we have been able to hold a Sprint event from a local pub. We are fortunate that the Father and Sons Restaurant on Osgoode St, right across from the University, has reserved their whole outdoor patio for us to use. Registration will take place there, and afterwards you will be able to stay for a drink and/or some food. In order for the restaurant to set aside the correct amount of space and bring in extra staff as required, you will be asked during the online registration how many people will be able to stay afterwards. Please note that the regular covid rules will be in place and you will need to be wearing a mask when not seated at a table.
Here is some general info about the map:
The contours are 2m and the scale is 1:4000. The area is quite small which will mean there will be lots of crossing between runners and courses. Generally, only the large trees are marked and there are no benches or picnic tables marked on the map as there are far too many around the campus. There is a rock pile symbol used quite often. Please note that the symbol in this case represents a statue of sort and not a rock pile.
Please note that due to construction there may be temporary fences not marked on the map in some areas.
Given that most of the course is run on pavement and grass and that the grassy areas are well maintained, refrain from bringing cleats as we do not want any trouble with the campus for having torn up an area.
Please strictly avoid the areas marked “out of bounds” (olive green or hash purple).
There will be 2 courses offered, a short and a long:
About the courses
- Short 2.5km with 25 controls
- Long 4.0km with 35 controls
Please note that if you are running the long course, with 35 controls, you will not be able to use an SI-5 or SI-8 finger stick. The O-Store will have SI-10 finger sticks available for rent at the race for $2.00 each. Bring a toonie or include an SI rental on your registration.
These courses feature some complex route choice legs. There will be multiple road crossings and although there is little traffic in the campus, it is possible there are some cars in certain areas so please be careful when crossing any roads.
For long courses only: There is going to be a map exchange so that the map readability is not altered throughout the course. You will start with both maps at the start so simply slip it over at the correct control (#21).
We are super excited for you all to run the courses! Have fun everyone!
One last note: we encourage everyone to use public transportation and make this event greener! There is an O-Train station right at Ottawa U, 2 min. away from the Father and Sons pub.
