Map: Chapel Hill

Course setter: Steve Powell

We’re back in Chapel Hill for the first event of the fall season. Although the area was visited in the spring, the courses have each been designed to provide very different experiences – you might not even realize you’re on the same map! Come on out and refresh your skills before next weekend’s always excellent O-Fest!

About the map: The map has a number of distinct forest/ravine sections, and provides terrain ripe for re-entrants, spurs and (everyone’s favorite) knolls. This is an active walking and casual mountain biking area, so the map also offers an extensive network of recently updated trails. Be aware that the contours are drawn at a surprising 5m, so expect some ups and downs…

Please note that in order to make use of the best portions of the map, the Short Advanced and Intermediate courses are a little longer than usual. The Long Advanced, Short Advanced and Intermediate courses require some road crossing, so please take care when you do. A small section of the Novice course follows a sidewalk.

If there is a significant amount of rain in the area before (or during!) the event, please be extra careful on some of the trails and bridge crossings, and expect to get muddy!

Course details:

  • Novice: 2.0km, 15 controls, 1:5000
  • Intermediate: 3.6km, 13 controls, 1:7500
  • Short Advanced: 3.6km, 13 controls, 1:7500
  • Long Advanced: 6.2km, 19 controls, 1:7500

More information about the event:

  • Parking/Start/Finish: The start/finish areas are near the main parking lot at Heritage Park
  • Schedule
    • Registration: 10am - 11:00am (Registration closes at 11:00am so the volunteer registrars can get out on course!)
    • Starts: 10:30am - 11:30am
    • Finish: Courses close and controls are collected at 2pm. All participants must report to finish by 2pm
  • Safety and Ethics: We encourage you to read our Safety and Ethics page to ensure a safe and enjoyable run.
  • Water: Please bring your own water bottles. We will provide water, but limit the use of disposable cups. Please have your water bottles at the finish.

As always, make sure you do a careful tick check when you get back.

The following day visit our Route Gadget page to enter the route you took and compare to others or just have a look at how others tackled the course – it’s a great learning tool!

New at orienteering or a bit rusty? Think you may need a quick review of map reading or some help with route planning? Join us at 10:30 for a 15 minute Mini-Intro to Orienteering. We ask that you arrive early enough to register for the event first so you have a map in-hand. The instructor will cover the event type, general procedures (SI stick, Clear and Check, finish process etc.), safety information and basic map reading/navigation pointers. Look for the sign near the registration table and we'll see you there.
