On Wednesday May 24, Orienteering Ottawa’s regular Wednesday Night Running Workout featuring coach Sheldon will be preempted by a Knock-Out Sprint (KO Sprint) test event at Andrew Hayden Park. This free bonus event, designed to test our ability to run a KO Sprint event prior to the 2023 O- Fest and the 2024 NAOCs, is open to all club members - and we need a good turnout to ensure the test is successful! Please consider coming out if you can make it, as it should be fun!

Wednesday’s event will start with participants running one of two qualifier heats (a ~1.7km sprint course with individual starts at 45s or 1min intervals) where your placing will determine your ranking for the next round. The top 12 finishers from the qualifiers (6 from each heat) will advance to one of two mass-start semi-final races. Slower runners (those not among the top 12) will move on to the consolation round. The top 6 runners from the semi-finals will advance to the six-person mass-start final. The consolation round will feature several mass-start sprint races where you can try head-to- head orienteering against your club-mates, just like in the semi-final and final. The timing team will develop and post the start list for the semi-final, final and consolation races following the conclusion of the qualifiers. Course distance for the semi-final, final and consolation races is ~1.8km. Note that forked courses may be used so be careful if you decide to follow others! SI timing will be used for all races so remember to bring your dibbler! (finger stick).

To re-cap, everyone will run two sprint courses with distances of ~1.7km and ~1.8km, while the six finalists will race a third time. For those working on their control bounty, finalists will visit ~35 controls! The provisional program/schedule for the evening is shown below…

To keep things manageable, participation will be limited to the first 36 members who RSVP by e-mail with their SI number to “Andrew . Cornett @ ottawaoc . ca” (without spaces). This will help us

prepare the start list for the qualification round ahead of time. Despite this, check-in at the timing tent on arrival is mandatory.
