Cite des Jeunes Fall Event Fall Series
October 20th 2024 10:00am - 2:00pm
Map: Cité des Jeunes
Fall is once again upon us, and that's the best time to enjoy orienteering in wonderful Gatineau Park. This weekend we are at Cité-des-Jeunes, venue of the 2021 Ottawa O-Fest. No matter your level, some challenging and enjoyable courses await everyone.
Registration is behind the Mont-Bleu sports complex 45.461602, -75.774594. The lots will fill up quickly so you can also park along Boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes or travel by bike or bus. Registration is open from 10:00am to 11:00am and the start window is from 10:30am to 11:30am. All courses close and controls are collected at 2:00pm. All participants must report to finish by 2:00pm.
We're offering 5 courses this Sunday with details below. Please read on for some important race notes.
- Novice - 2.1km, 55m climb, 9 controls, 1:7,500
- Intermediate - 2.9km, 65m climb, 9 controls, 1:7,500
- Short Advanced - 2.9km, 90m climb, 12 controls, 1:7,500
- Medium Advanced - 5.6km, 185m climb, 16 controls, 1:10,000
- Long Advanced - 10.3km, 395m climb, 28 controls, 1:10,000
There are two start locations, one for the Novice, Intermediate, and Short Advanced courses and another for the Medium and Long Advanced courses. Both are a flat 600m walk from the arena along major trails. All maps must be picked up at registration! There will be clear and check boxes at both start locations but no officials there. You may start at your leisure.
None of the courses cross any roads, however participants should still exercise caution on pathways and trails. Keep to the right, yield to faster runners, roller skiers, and cyclists, and look both ways before crossing.
The Novice course has a control that is both the first and fourth checkpoint. It must be punched both times it is visited.
The Medium and Long Advanced courses have some forbidden routes which are marked as purple X's over a path on the map. There is no marking in the terrain. You are allowed to cross directly over these paths but cannot run along or beside them. This is to encourage route choice.
The final section of all the Advanced courses has many controls packed densely and some cris-crossy legs, be sure you're going to the right control.
There will be no water provided on course, however Medium and Long Advanced participants will pass through the start approximately 3.5 km into their courses. You are welcome to leave water bottles or food for yourselves there.
The Long Advanced course has a map flip.
Hope to see you there.
