Map: Wesley Clover Parks - Corkstown Rd

We are looking forward to another late fall event at Wesley Clover Parks and we hope to see you there! The event will be entirely on the west side of the train tracks making full use of all the terrain there – the flat running sections at the top for longer legs, the tricky, technical rocky and hilly sections around the edges for some short, quick legs requiring close attention to detail. We have had fun creating the courses. We hope you enjoy them!

We have our regular 4 courses planned:

  • Novice (2.9 km) of the trails, for those of you who are new or new-ish to orienteering, or just want a casual family stroll through the forest ; I
  • Intermediate (3.1 km) for those who are ready to go off trail and try finding controls off the beaten path, but with the opportunity to always come back to the trail to find yourself;
  • Advanced courses, Short (4.3 km) and Long (6.0 km) for anyone ready to brave the rocky confusing ground around the perimeter of the park, along with the sometimes marshy and occasionally gnarly flatlands in the centre.
General notes:
  • Parking will be at the main entrance to the campground – right at the top for the hill on Corkstown Road. Our regular road signs will tell you where to go.
  • Magic of Lights is setting up for their Holiday Light show. Please be respectful of their displays, stay away and do not touch anything.
  • There will be a portable toilet (courtesy of the folks with Magic of Lights) at the registration area.
  • There are some spots with poison ivy on the map – not a lot, and not a lot showing at this time of year. But if you are affected by poison ivy you may want to keep an eye out.
  • Although it is late fall, you should still do a tick check after orienteering – always!
Maps notes:
  • The campground area is out of bounds for us, due to the Magic of Lights set-up, except for the registration area. It is marked as such on the map.
  • There is a walk to the start through the Magic of Lights set-up, which will be well marked. Please stick to the marked route to get to the start!
  • There is a marked route from the final control to the finish control. The route runs adjacent to a Forest School building and through their outdoor activity area. Please follow the marked route to the finish!
  • A lot of the smaller wet areas on the map aren’t wet right now; The forest floor is very dry.
  • The forest growth is changing the thickness of the forest - you will find that what is white on the map isn’t necessarily white in the forest;
  • There are a number of new trails – mostly snowshoe trails - in the terrain. Some are very minor, some are less so. The newest trails have not been added to the map, so be careful when locating yourself on the map using trails!
  • The Long Advanced course has a map flip on it.

Hope to see you on Sunday!
Anne (Course Planner, Meet Director) and Linda (Controller)
