Wesley Clover Winter Series

This Sunday, Orienteering Ottawa is hosting a Ski-Orienteering event at Wesley Clover Parks, home of the .Kanata Nordic Ski Club (45.33230711367421, -75.86460451601785) We invite Orienteering Ottawa Club members and Kanata Nordic members to join us for a morning of skiing and navigation! Of course, as always, everyone is welcome – you do not have to be a club member to come out and experience the great sport of orienteering combined with the great sport of cross-country skiing!
This weekend’s event will include three ski-O courses and one snowshoe course. No fat bikes this week, sorry! The ski-O courses are 2+ km, 6+ km, and 8+ km straight line distance. Remember that you will be adding 25% or more to the distance when you are skiing. The Snowshoe O is a 60 minute limit score-O course – you can choose the order you do the controls, and how many you do, as long as you are back within 60 minutes.
At Wesley Clover Parks, the Short course will stay on the trail network west of the train tracks. It will mostly be on the major ski trails but will venture briefly onto the snowshoe trails as well. So if you are using skate skis there will be a bit of double poling required.
The Middle and Long course cross the track and explore the areas east of there. The Long course even heads off Wesley Clover property onto the Ottawa West Winter Trail network. Both the Middle and Long courses are set to take advantage of the snowshoe trails on the west side of the map, so skate skiers will need to choose between long routes or more double poling.
Registration opens a half hour earlier than normal, at 9:30. Courses close an hour earlier than normal, at 1:00, so we can clear out for the regular afternoon ski programs. Registration will be in the Kanata Nordic cabin. If you have not, as an individual or a team member, previously participated in one of our events, please pre-register on our pre-registration page.. Doing this ahead of time speeds up the on-site registration process. Complete this at least 48 hours before the event. This step is optional and does not commit you to having to participate in the event and requires no cost..
On-site Registration: 9:30 to 10:30 (register as a team, or an individual). Start window is open from 9:30-11:00 . Mini Clinic for newcomers: 10:30. Download/checkout by 1:00pm inside the cabin. You must checkout even if you didn’t finish your course.
Members the Kanata Nordic Ski Club will receive a discount on their event fees. Discounted fees are:
- Adults $10
- Juniors (8-20 yrs) $7
- Child (0-7 yrs) free
Additional fees:
- Timing chip rental: $2
- Whistle: $2 (whistles mandatory. Bring your own.)
- A limited number of ski-o map holders are available for rent. $5 plus $15 deposit
Results are posted on-site. Check out how you did compared to your friends! Results will also be available on our website after the race at ottawaoc.ca. Please note that participants will need to provide a cell phone number and the license plate number of the vehicle they arrived in. This is for safety purposes. Ski-O or Snowshoe-O - adventures in the snow.
As these events are very weather dependent be sure to check back often throughout the season for additions, cancellations or rescheduling.
What will this cost? Regular rates apply - please see our winter events page. (ottawaoc.ca/events/winter-events) Trail fees are additional if you do not hold season's passes for the particular area or they may be included in the registration. If so, that will be indicated.
