Nakkertok Our Sunday Events
September 27th 2026 10:00am - 1:00pm
Map: Nakkertok South
Welcome to (at least) the 20 th version of the Nakkertok fall O-meet. In prior years I have usually held this event in late fall when the leaves were down and the visibility was good. But in the past few years we have had to reduce the available orienteering terrain due to concerns with hunting near the property boundaries. Hunting season does not start until October in this area. As such, I have been able to expand the usable terrain – new woods and control sites!
I was a little concerned about the thick foliage right now but wow!, the woods are really nice and open – and colourful. Over the last 20 years the forest canopy has filled out so there is much less brush and fewer saplings. Yes, there is some rocky ground but I have tried to keep the courses in the best terrain.
Map Notes:
- With the extensive trail network there may be a few long “carry” legs to get you to the open and detailed (O-fun) woods. There is a new ski trail under construction and some new mountain bike loops but I have avoided putting controls in those areas.
- You may encounter work crews along some of the trails. They know we are around – say Hi!
- The woods are generally very dry. Small marshy areas have mostly disappeared from view. But the big ponds, where beavers have been busy, are overflowing. The long dam at the east end of Weber (lake) is hazardous – and out of bounds.
- Please observe the other areas marked out-of-bounds with the purple hatching. That includes the main parking lot – which might be a route choice for some runners.
- There is a network of snowshoe trails signed with yellow and blue squares on trees.Virtually all of these trails are indistinguishable from the surrounding terrain in the summer and are not shown on the map – except for the occasional sections that are clearly visible on the ground.
- Long Advanced: 7.3 km, 17 controls, 150m climb
- Short Advanced: 5.1 km, 16 controls, 125m climb
- Intermediate: 3.1 km, 12 controls, 90m climb
- Novice: 2.8 km, 16 controls, 55m climb
Now almost a tradition, the Nakkertok Adventure Group will be using our controls in the afternoon for a 1 hour “Fun Run” in the Score-O format. We help with the timing and they pick up all the controls. And 75-100 ski- club kids and parents get to enjoy authentic O-courses. Many are good navigators – a few show-up at our other events.
Regular registration times and starts apply but we like to plan to be off course by 12:30 so come early - the weather looks perfect.
Cheers, Bill Anderson, Meet Director, and Jennie A., event controller.
