Map: Almonte

Meet Director Stefan Bergström Controller Alexander Bergström

After a few days of nasty, weather spring is supposed to come next weekend with a forecast of double digit temperatures. You are welcome to the first local Orienteering event of the 2018 spring season in beautiful Gemmill Park in Almonte, about 45 km West of Ottawa. The area was snow free before the freezing rain and the new ice and snow will be gone by the weekend.

The event site is at Gemmill Park, with parking at Almonte Arena, 182 Bridge Street, Almonte.

Gemmill Park has a mix of parkland, sports fields, forests and trails, and a few steep hills. The two advanced courses will have roughly a quarter of the courses in the urban downtown Almonte and the advanced courses crosses some streets with traffic. It is not much traffic on Sunday mornings but please use caution when crossing streets. The Novice and Intermediate courses are completely within the park and do not cross any streets.

After your race, please take the opportunity to visit the charming downtown Almonte and have lunch or coffee in the restaurants and cafes on Mill street, see the waterfalls on Mississippi River, visit the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum, or shop in the many small stores and galleries.

Map scale 1:5,000 with 2m contours. The map is drawn as a sprint map (ISSOM2007). If you are not familiar with the Forbidden to cross symbols please review them here https://www.maprunner.co.uk/map-symbols/

We ask that you arrive early enough to register for the event first so you have a map in-hand. The instructor will cover the event type, general procedures (SI stick, Clear and Check, finish process etc), safety information and basic map reading/navigation pointers. Look for the sign near the registration table and we'll see you there.

The following day visit our Route Gadget page to enter the route you took and compare to others or just have a look at how others tackled the course. -- a great learning tool.
