Burnt Lands Orienteering Practice Thursday Orienteering Practice
September 19th 2019 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Organizers: Jeff Teutsch (Coach), Jennie Anderson (Coach)
Map: Burnt Lands PP
Parking and meeting point: Park along the side of Burnt Lands Rd. Look for the club banner and my red Honda Fit with a roofrack / a whole bunch of cars along the side of the road. The pin in the map below is in the exact location.
Training:
The intermediate group will be focusing on 'thumbing along' and careful map reading as you move from feature to feature. This group will go out with a coach to start and will then have the opportunity to try this on their own.
The advanced and high performance groups will have an exercise focused on taking good compass bearings. There will be multiple different loops where each leg requires you to take a bearing from one control to the next. Some of the loops will have different parts of the map removed to force you to focus on your compass in different ways.
We will start with an explanation and demonstration of how to take and follow a good compass bearing and what steps you should be doing at the controls to do this as smoothly as possible.
There will be no SI or other timing for this training.
HPP and Train to Train program athletes will start with a group warm-up that anyone is welcome to join.
A reminder to please e-mail Jeff Teutsch at programs@ottawaoc.ca by noon on Thursday to reserve a map. We do not guarantee maps for those that don't send an e-mail.
Note: Everyone should have a headlamp for this practice (we strongly recommend one with at least 1000 lumens) as it will be getting dark before the end of the session. If you have any questions about purchasing a headlamp please let us know.
