Practice details:
As this is the first practice of the fall season and many of us are just getting back to orienteering we will be focusing on some basics.
Intermediate group - this group will spend the session doing a map walk with an instructor. Among other things this group will be looking at and discussing vegetation.
The advanced group and Team Canada athletes will have a session that is split between detailed map reading and compass bearing work - two critical foundational skills! The compass bearing portion is a 3km course through relatively flat and generally open terrain. The map reading exercise is a 1.8km micro orienteering course at 1:2,500 scale. It should be both really challenging and really fun!
Train to Train groups - athletes in this group will do a mix of exercises based on the above depending on their experience level in the program.
You will want to have a headlamp with you this week as it will be getting dark around 7:45, and about half an hour earlier in the woods. We recommend a headlamp with a rating of at least 500 lumens and more is better. If you have any questions about headlamps just ask (jeff@ottawaoc.ca)
All participants should also bring a compass (we will have a few extras if you don't have one) and advanced participants should bring a control description holder. We will not be using SI timing.
