Course Notes (thanks James!!!)...
I would like to share this ski orienteering map that was used for 3 different Chelsea Nordiq groups for their practices. The U14 Race and Adventure groups went out with their exchange groups from Canmore and Vancouver then the U12 Race group went out during the night practice. The format of the Score-O is a 2 hour time limit with each control worth 50 pts and a penalty of 20 pts for each minute late. In total there are 24 controls available.
The course starts at Maple Lodge with parking at the new expanded parking lot at Camp Fortune (called 10B). It is located behind the Clifford lift which is at the west side of the lower parking lot then you drive across the little bridge where the expanded parking is for cross country skiers. The ski trail access is at the south end of the control circle for control 3 then you can ski up to the start triangle from there.
The trail network for the ski orienteering includes the biathlon trails (including the race trails) plus some surrounding groomed trails plus several backcountry trails. All trails are in very good conditions at the time of this writing and look like they will remain this way for the duration that this map is available. Hazards are minimal where I only saw two exposed rocks while skiing on the backcountry trails. One was at the top of a hill near #23 and easily avoided. The other was in the middle of the trail on the descent leaving control #24 to the north-west. It is avoidable but it's in a location that is a bit harder to notice so ski with caution if you decide to exit #24 to the north-west. All other trails were well tracked and reasonably forgiving.
For those who are not familiar with the backcountry trails in this area, there are several advanced trails with steep descents. Some of these trails were marked as out of bounds for the Chelsea Nordiq groups and I've kept those on the map. I also kept two one-way trails in the western section of the map due to two short but very steep hills. On both these sections, the direction of travel will be uphill but you could still see skiers going the other way as they aren't one-way trails for other users. Aside from these sections, there are several other moderate descents that may still be too challenging for some skiers. Please ski in control and stay on the trails within your skill level. It is still possible to enjoy the score-O without going on the harder sections of trails by skipping control #23 and #24 and accessing the other controls from the nearby groomed trails.
There are also one-way markings on the map for the "race trails" in the center of the map. These one way markers are also on the trails so all users will be following the same direction. This is due to safety reasons as the trails have some steep sections where some skiers may be travelling at high speed.
Both skate or classic technique are acceptable for this event but the double poling may be difficult for some on the backcountry trails. There are more hills compared to the typical ski orienteering course so I would suggest classic if you're sometimes on the fence between the two.
