Summer Solstice #1 - Hazeldean Park Summer Solstice Series
June 2nd 2026 5:45pm - 8:00pm
Hazeldean Woods and Katimavik Woods
Our first Score-O is Tuesday June 2nd in Kanata, on a beautiful map recently completed and updated by Stefan Bergstrom. This will be the first time we run a club event on this entire map, we hope you enjoy it. The registration and start locations are at Cattail Creek Park, adjacent to the Katimavik elementary school (Link to the start location). Parking is available in the school parking lot, at nearby Hewitt Park and on neighbouring streets. No washroom access is available.
TRAFFIC NOTE: because of construction on Highway 417 we have delayed the start time by 15 minutes relative to our usual schedule, to try and avoid the worst of rush hour. However, do allow for plenty of time to make your way to the race site. We will not be able to further delay on site.
Course Notes:
- This is a 60 minute race. There will be NO WATER on the course, please bring a water bottle with you if you think you will need it. There will be water at the finish.
- The 1:4000 map will be large and double sided which will require careful route planning to avoid “forgetting” some controls when handling the map.
- The course area is a large square, bordered by busy streets. You will not need to cross those. However, Kakulu road is a larger feeder street crossing the area from east to west which you will need to pay particular attention to. And you will of course need to pay attention to all residential streets which can be busy at that time of day. Be aware and cautious when crossing or following any road or parking lot.
- The course will take you through a mix of residential areas, narrow green corridors in-between neighbourhoods, and fairly extensive wooded areas, making for fun, varied orienteering.
- Respect all out-of-bounds areas. There are some private condo communities that we must KEEP OUT of (marked with pink hash marks on the map).
- Olive green areas on the map are private property and are also out-of-bounds. Do not enter them. Note that map features inside olive green areas may or may not be accurate or complete.
- Generally, please be mindful and respectful when running within communities, even where there are no such restrictions, especially if travelling in groups.
- There are several sports fields in the area – baseball, soccer, basketball. These fields are not marked as out of bounds but if they are in use, you must KEEP OFF and run around them and not interfere with games, even if seemingly informal. Note that soccer goals are marked on the map as a small cross, but field lines are not marked. And of course, be particularly mindful and respectful of the many playgrounds that exist on the map and their young users.
- There may be poison ivy in some of the woods if you are off trail, please exercise caution.
- And as always, be mindful of ticks in the wooded sections. Wear adequate clothing and check yourself thoroughly after the race.
Don’t forget to wear a watch so that you can avoid late penalties and make full use of your time!
Event schedule:
- 5:45 - 6:45 Registration desk is open
- 6:30 Mini clinic for newcomers
- 6:55 Instructions and Map distribution
- 7:00 Mass Start
- 8:00 Finish (NOTE: exact time will depend on actual start time).
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Summer Solstice Series
The OOC Summer Solstice Series consists of Score-O events held Tuesday evenings in Ottawa parks in June. The meets are Score-O's where each participant visits as many controls as possible within the given time. The controls can be visited in any order and the time limit is one hour. Bonuses are given for getting all the controls in under the hour.
Meeting Point: The map below indicates only the general area of the event. In the week before the event, the map will be adjusted to display the exact details of our meeting point and other meet specifics will be posted.
Registration : 5:30 pm - 6:30. Mass start 6:45.
Finish : 1 hour after actual start. 2 point penalty for each minute late.
An adjustment system based on age, gender and experience is used to 'level the field' so that while strong experienced orienteers will have to strive to get all the controls, youngsters, oldsters and newcomers can enjoy working toward goals more suited to them. Be sure to complete this form online before your first meet. It can be found on the Summer Solstice page .(en francais)
Be sure to bring a watch to each event.
Your score for the series is your best 3 events.
Safety and Ethics: We encourage you to read our Safety and Ethics page to ensure a safe and enjoyable run.
